A series of novel phosphorus-containing compounds suitable for use as a flame retardant having the following formula are disclosed: wherein R 1-R 8 independently are H or C 1-C 4 alkyl; Y is--OH or wherein Q is H,--NO 2,--NH 2,--OH,--CH 3,--CHO,--COOH, A is--O--, --,--CH 2--, or--C(CH 3) 2--; R 9 and R 10 independently are H, or C 1-C 4 alkyl. A series of novel phosphorus-containing compounds suitable for use as a flame retardant having the following formula are disclosed:wherein R1-R8 independently are H or C1-C4 alkyl; Y is -OH orwherein Q is H, -NO2, -NH2, -OH, -CH3, -CHO, -COOH,A is -O-,-, -CH2-, or -C(CH3)2-; R9 and R10 independently are H, or C1-C4 alkyl.
