For type I brazing, no continuous reaction layer was observed at interfaces, the Ni net at the alumina side dissolved and nano-sized of TiNi3 precipitates as well as icron-sized Cu-Ni phase, and the net at the 316SS side became surface hardened by a solid solution reaction. To prevent the thermal-induced cracking, the Ag-based matrix provides a continuous and soft medium to release residual thermal stresses. To enhance the strength of the brazed joint, the soft Ag-based matrix is strengthened via precipitation hardening, solid solution hardening, and filament reinforcement. Shear strength of the joint up to 384 MPa was obtained if Al2O3 substrate was in a good quality. The brazed joint survived after four cycles of harsh thermal shock tests from 800oC to room temperature. |
